September 2013 – You don’t perform the operation; the operation performs you

The Way Way Back PosterNow back in employment, I haven’t been able to visit the cinema as much as I perhaps would have liked to.

As such, films including Austenland, Planes, Justin and the Knights of Valor, R.I.P.D and, er, One Direction: This Is Us have managed to pass me by.

On the occasions that I did make it to the cinema I caught the likes of Upstream Colour, Pain & Gain and Insidious: Chapter 2, and got around to reviewing Riddick, You’re Next, Diana, Rush and Sunshine On Leith.

By far the best film I saw this month was The Way, Way Back, a film by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash that starred Sam Rockwell and Steve Carell, and centred on Liam James’ painfully shy teen Duncan.

I also got the chance to review DreamWorks Animation’s Dragons: Riders Of Berk, a television spin-off from their 2010 hit How To Train Your Dragon. I’d tried to watch it on Cartoon Network but struggled to get passed the recycled John Powell and cruder animation. On second viewing, however, it completely won me over.

Elsewhere I attempted to cook borscht, attended the last ever Leuchars Air Show and visited the Dundee Science Centre for Finding A Neish. I also wrote about the best horror sequels for HeyUGuys.

Film of the month: The Way, Way Back
