January 2014 – Sell me this pen!

Lone Survivor PosterSo, apparently we’re already one month into 2014. I’ve spent so much time in the cinema this month that it’s almost completely passed me by.

I did some walking, somehow dragging myself from Dundee to St Andrews, and visited the RRS Discovery for an impromptu history lesson, but otherwise all I can really remember from January is Keira Knightley’s American accent and the shock of seeing Jonah Hill’s penis.

With awards season right around the corner, cinemas have been awash with Oscar nominees. American Hustle and 12 Years A Slave kicked things off, but they were soon joined by Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom, August: Osage County and Inside Llewyn Davis. Most impressive of the lot was The Wolf Of Wall Street, which featured an astonishing central performance by Leonardo DiCaprio.

Not everything was quite so highbrow, thankfully, and there was even some innocent fun to be had with the likes of Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones, Delivery Man and Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. The Armstrong Lie also had its moments. January’s only out-and-out failure was That Awkward Moment, a joyless waste of talent that squandered Zac Efron, Michael B Jordan and Imogen Poots. The best film of the month, meanwhile, at least in my opinion, was Lone Survivor, a truly harrowing war film from Battleship director Peter Berg.

I also looked ahead to the rest of the year, listing ten films I am desperately looking forward to and ten that I am positively dreading, and back at the best characters of 2013. For Best for Film, I compiled another list of upcoming animated movies and noted ten of my most anticipated movies of this year’s Glasgow Film Festival.

Film of the month: Lone Survivor
